Hundreds of kids awarded grants for parks programs

"We have a program that allows them to attend a Mavericks game, and without the scholarships there might be some who'll never experience a professional basketball game."

ARLINGTON -- There will be less PlayStation time this spring.

More than 350 children were awarded scholarships Monday to help cover enrollment fees for Parks and Recreation programs beginning this spring.

Amber Heaton signed her three boys up for tae kwon do, which gives her at least two hours of 'mommy time.'

'When you have that many boys, you'll take five minutes when you can get it,' Heaton said of her sons, ages 5, 6 and 8. 'They'll get both exercise and discipline.'

The youths shared more than $65,000 from federal community block grant money. The scholarships are income-based. Read more
