Open Question: Fearless with Jet Li: Martial Arts Philosophy?
Did you resonate with or agree with the concept that learning how to fight should be utilized to prevent, not win, conflicts? How about the concept that lethal force is pursued by the young, but the old and wise understand why one refuse to use lethal force?
For those unfamiliar with the film, it depicts one of China’s historical heroes, Huo Yuanjing, as he learns to use Wu-Shu or Kung fu to win competition bouts. It also deals with tragedy, revenge, the cycle of violence, and how to get out of it.
It’s also a contradiction, since the later students of Wu-Shu were never taught lethal force or techniques after the reforms were made, so the ideals of keeping violence from cycling is no more than an abstract dogma. Something someone else told them, not something they themselves witnessed and experienced.
The man that utilizes lethal force, and regrets it, is not the same man as the one that has no idea how to utilize lethal force, and simply avoids it because he finds it convenient. On that topic, can anyone, martial artist or not, ever understand Wu-Shu or Wu-Wei, without first learning how to utilize lethal force?
