Open Question: Do you know any LEOs that learned aikido with this in mind?
The way aikijutsu was practiced in Japan, 180 years ago, was to prioritize distance as a safety measure. One of the common dangers was getting too close, and someone grabbing the handle of your sword. Or coming too close without unsheathing the sword, and someone pulling out a dagger. Thus the various grabbing stuff in aikido, was thus very useful to teach the muscle memory designed to check and guard one’s left side, where the sword was. For law enforcement officers, that is obviously where their side arm is… most of the time. And LEOs tend to be much closer to people than the Japanese historically thought was sane. Just a little tid bit of historical information I got from a seminar.
Thus the question is, do you know any LEos that trains aikido with this in mind, even though aikido is a gendai art and aikijutsu isn’t?
