I'm a nidan (2nd degree black belt) and a head instructor and coach of a judo club. Belt Ranks originally started with judo to show a students progress. 1st degree black belt is known as Shodan as in Japanese meaning beginning rank. Between 1st-3rd degree black belt ranks is known as yudansha meaning those who have obtain a black belt rank but still a beginning student. Kodansha is blacks belts from 4th degree and above in rank. These are the people who have mastered judo as an art and would earn the title of sensei or professor. Some of my students get confused because they also practice few styles of karate where the low rank black belts call them selves sensei’s and make the mistake of calling me Sensei when I’m only a nidan. Of course different martial arts have different requirements and titles for each rank. Is this a coming term used for just any black belt of a martial art in this country?
